The story behind the Neapolitan Pizza

It was the pizza baker Raffaele Esposito, who in 1889 was behind the world's first pizza delivery. He was known throughout Naples for his pizzeria “Pietro il Pizzaiolo”.

Among his customers were the Italian couple, Umberto I and Margherita. As it would be inappropriate for the royals to dine with the “regular people” of Esposito's pizzeria, he was told to deliver pizzas to the royal residence.

Esposito baked 3 different pizzas. One of them represented colors of the Italian national flag which had basil (green), mozzarella (white) and tomatoes (red).

The queen thought that this pizza tasted the best, and the pizza was named “Pizza Margherita”. Even today, “Pizza Margherita” is one of the world's most popular pizzas.
